Who is Fred Buchwitz?

A popular artist in the summer here in Banff is Fred Buchwitz. Fred is based in British Columbia but has depicted many of the spectacular scenes to be found in and around Banff National Park.

We are often asked, in the About Canada store who Fred Buchwitz is.

Fred started, at age 14, working with poster paint but this proved to be inadequate and restrictive. He eventually concluded that oil paints would best suit his needs. Being self-taught, he managed to develop his own unique style of painting that sets him apart from other artists. Fred grew up surrounded by abundant natural beauty which provided bountiful ideas for his work, ranging from the crashing waves of the west coast to the exhilarating mountain vistas.

In 1972, he decided to make painting his full-time profession. Since then Fred’s work has been steadily gaining in popularity. Recently, he caught the attention of the Bradford Exchange, which commissioned him to provide images for a collector’s plate series that has been entitled, “The Cabins of Comfort River” and is being sold worldwide.

Moraine Lake Banff

We sell mainly the matted prints and larger limited edition prints. Most of Freds originals are sold but he is happy to create a commission piece of Lake Louise, Castle Mountain or Moraine Lake for About Canada on demand (these pieces take about two months to produce).

The Three Sisters, above, is often bought by families, (Sisters or Parents for Sisters) which I think is quite a neat gift idea.
